Robert's Regional Park
Redwoods, swimming, and enough space to actually spread out
Oakland Hills, Oakland
About This Place
Robert's sits high up on Skyline Boulevard in a serious grove of second-growth redwoods, which basically means you're getting that old-growth forest feeling without the three-hour drive. It's an 87-acre spread that doesn't feel crowded even when there's an actual crowd, which matters when you're trying to have a decent day outside. The whole place has that lush, quiet thing going on that makes you remember why living in the Bay Area is worth the traffic and the rent.
What actually gets people here is the flexibility. You can bring the family and claim a picnic area for the afternoon, or you can just hike through the redwoods if you're not in a picnic mood. There's a swimming pool that runs seasonally, an archery club tucked in there somewhere, and enough trails that you can either take a casual walk or actually work up a sweat. In summer when it's hot in the flatlands, this place is noticeably cooler because of all the tree cover.
It's the kind of place where you show up planning to stay an hour and realize three hours have passed without you noticing. You can bring your dog, bring your kids, bring your extended family for something like a baptism or a birthday. The park handles groups like it expects them, which is refreshing. And since it's up on the hills, you've got actual separation from the city noise, but you're not so far out that it feels like a production to get there.
