Café Colucci
Oakland's longtime East African spot that tastes like home
San Pablo, Oakland
About This Place
Café Colucci is one of those places that hasn't changed much in decades, and honestly, that's exactly why you should go. It's a North Oakland fixture in the Bay Area's deep Ethiopian food scene, the kind of unpretentious spot where you walk in and immediately get hit with the smell of a family kitchen doing things right. The space has that lived-in feel, decorated simply with Ethiopian paintings and photographs, but the real show is on your plate.
You're looking at the classics done well: beef tibs with zesty awaze sauce, doro wot with tender bone-in chicken and hard-boiled eggs, yebeg alicha with herbs and lamb, gomen with peppery collard greens. There's a solid veggie combo if you want to go that route, mixing spiced lentils, split peas, cabbage, and pureed garbanzos into a colorful spread. Everything comes on injera, that spongy, sour flatbread that's foundational to the whole experience. The menu's diverse enough that you could come back a bunch of times and still have things to try.
What makes Café Colucci work is the straightforwardness of it all. The portions are generous, the prices stay reasonable, and there's no pretension getting in the way of really good food. This isn't a place trying to be anything other than what it is: a spot where you can eat well, eat a lot, and feel taken care of without any fuss.
