Tilden Park Steam Train

A narrow-gauge steam train that actually runs through the Oakland Hills

Tilden Park, Orinda

About This Place

The Tilden Steam Train pulls out from a station tucked into the ridgeline above Orinda, a scaled-down locomotive that moves at the pace of someone taking their time on a Sunday afternoon. It's genuinely steam-powered, not some diesel approximation, which means you get the smell and the sound and the slight vibration through your seat as it climbs the grade along the park's ridge system. The tracks run about a mile out and back, skirting oak woodland and giving you views that would require actual hiking to see otherwise. Kids get hypnotized by it. Adults remember something about trains they'd forgotten. The operation runs weather permitting, which in the Bay Area means you can count on it most weekends but should check before making the drive. Parking sits right at the trailhead on Grizzly Peak Boulevard, accessible enough that you don't need to be an ultralight backpacker to reach the boarding area. The whole experience takes maybe thirty minutes of your day. On crowded Sundays in Tilden, when every family with a stroller and a dog is clogging the main parking areas, the steam train draws a specific crowd people who came specifically for this, not people who wandered over from the carousel. It's operated by the Redwood Valley Railroad, a volunteer crew that keeps the thing running with the kind of meticulous attention you notice when you're this close to the machinery. The tickets cost next to nothing. There's an actual reason it's still here after decades.
